Teddy Swims turns a breakup into a rewind on “Break Up in Reverse.” Instead of bitterness, he imagines the ending unfolding backward, each painful moment slowly leading back toward love. The idea was partly inspired by Nas’ “Rewind,” but Swims pulls it into deeply personal territory. The song arrives as he works through the end of his relationship with the mother of his child, giving every line an extra layer of weight.
That honesty is what makes the record land. Swims does not sound angry. He sounds like someone wishing time could move differently, so goodbye would come first and love could be waiting at the end.
