Will Swinton is back with “Hate My Guts,” and this one cuts from a different angle. Instead of leaning into heartbreak as pure longing, he turns toward the messier aftermath, guilt, regret, and that awful moment when you know you were part of the damage and just want the other person to stop looking at you like the villain.
What makes the song land is how lived-in it feels. The guitars leave plenty of room for the hurt to breathe, the drums move like a clock you cannot shut off, and Will’s voice sounds cracked in exactly the right places. He is not asking for a second chance. He is asking for a little mercy.
It also arrives at a big moment for him. Between the upcoming North American tour, which kicks off at Lollapalooza, the recent lost americana run with mgk, and the way songs like “Only One,” “Better Off,” and “Find a Way” have kept sharpening his sound, Will Swinton feels like he is moving fast without losing the emotional thread that got people invested in the first place.
“Hate My Guts” does not try to make heartbreak look pretty. That is exactly why it works.
