Morgan Wallen turns quiet doubt into something painfully clear on “Been By Now.” The new single started with a Charlie Handsome instrumental, and the melody came together almost immediately. Wallen says much of the song took shape within 30 minutes, which makes sense. Nothing about it feels overworked.
The production carries a lightness that almost tricks you. Underneath it, the story is much heavier. Wallen sings from the point where a relationship has lasted long enough to reveal the truth, but not long enough to become what either person hoped.
That contrast gives “Been By Now” its pull. The music moves easily. The message does not. It is the sound of realizing that if something was going to become more, it probably would have happened already.
