Erling Haaland just added “pop culture curveball” to the résumé. The Manchester City striker has teamed up with fellow Norwegian star Kygo for a remix of “Kygo jo,” the old viral rap song he made back in 2016 with his Norway under-17 teammates Erik Botheim and Erik Tobias Sandberg under the name Flow Kingz.
That song had already taken on a life of its own online, but now the timing makes it hit differently. Norway is back in the World Cup for the first time in 28 years, Haaland has been scoring like a man completely out of patience, and suddenly this teenage rap experiment has circled back around as an actual national moment.
There is something great about how unserious and perfect it all feels. Before Haaland was flattening defenders and putting up ridiculous numbers in the Bundesliga and Premier League, he was a teenager in Bryne making a rap song with his friends because they were bored. Now Kygo has stepped in and given it a fresh coat of life, turning a niche internet favorite into something bigger just as Norway’s run keeps getting louder.
Honestly, it is the kind of crossover you could not script much better. A football superstar. A global dance star. An old rap song nobody expected to matter again. And now here it is, back in the mix, weirdly charming and perfectly timed.
