Some albums document a relationship. Sam Smith‘s fifth studio album lives inside one. Smith released Hazel Eyes today via Capitol Records, a 12-track song cycle built around a real-time love story, alongside a new single and video for “Constant Companion.”
“Constant Companion” plays like a spaghetti western dropped into a soul record. Rob Moose’s strings sweep in over dusky guitar while Smith’s low-slung vocal pledges loyalty like an outlaw: “I can be the razor in your hat, you can be the blade that’s got my back.” The video, shot in Spain by director Albert Moya with choreography from (LA)HORDE, follows Smith and a lover through dusty plains and frontier outposts. It sounds cinematic, but never overproduced.
It also sounds handcrafted. This is the first time Smith has co-produced an entire album, working alongside Simon Aldred and David Odlum, and sessions ran through New York’s Electric Lady Studios with a tight circle: Feist, Shahzad Ismaily, Moose, the 28-member TwoCity Chorus. Three singles paved the way in, “When He’s Gone,” “Oh Mother,” “My Guy,” each pulling from a different corner of the record’s baroque pop, British folk, and outlaw country range.
