ARTBAT and David Guetta released their rebuild of Gotye and Kimbra’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” on September 4, 2026, with an extended mix alongside it. The two vocals everybody can already sing are still sitting on top. Everything underneath them has been swapped out.
The original ran on a plucked xylophone line and a slow-burn breakup. This version sounds built for a festival field at midnight, with Gotye’s verse riding a rolling melodic techno groove, Kimbra’s half cracking the whole thing open, and Guetta’s instinct for a drop carrying it the rest of the way. ARTBAT had been testing a rework in their sets long before any of it was official, including a run at Cercle Odyssey in Paris and a back to back with MORTEN at EDC Las Vegas.
Handing one of the defining crossover songs of the 2010s to a melodic techno duo is a real swing. “Somebody That I Used to Know” came off Making Mirrors in 2011 and then spent a decade as the kind of record people were faintly embarrassed to still love. Fifteen years later it works at peak time, which says as much about where ARTBAT have pushed that Afterlife-adjacent sound as it does about the song itself.
