Deadmau5 Files $10 Million Lawsuit Against Play Records
Deadmau5 is seeking legal action against Canadian label Play Records to the tune of $10 million. The mau5 alleges Play Records have released several remixes and mashups produced earlier on in his career without his consent.
Originally, Joel Zimmerman had agreed to produce two remixes for Play Records president Meleny Brown, aka Melleefresh. After leaving for his current management company Three Six Zero Group, he was required to buy out his contract while Play Records retained the rights to his older records. The contract stipulated that deadmau5 must give “prior written consent for any new remix entailing the change of melody and/or lyrics.” These new releases are a breach of contract, and in classic deadmau5 fashion he’s not going to let this one rest.
