On December 29th 2014, myself and my girlfriend had the pleasure of attending Armin van Buuren’s performance at Pier 94 in New York City. It was an absolutely magical night for me, and even more for her. This event review is a guest review done by her as her experience truly expresses how powerful music can be to someone.
FULL REVIEW + PICS:
On December 29th, in the heart of the holiday season, Armin van Buuren performed in New York City at Pier 94. I had been so excited to see one of my favorite artists, but the day before the show, I received the horrible news that my best friend had passed away at the young age of 23. She enjoyed EDM of all styles and had accompanied me to so many events that I knew she wouldn’t want me to miss Armin on her behalf.
From the moment I arrived at the venue, I could feel the excitement from every attendee. Even while waiting on line, I met a girl and her father who were both ecstatic to hear the trance sounds of Armin- proving that his style and music appeals to people of all ages and backgrounds. I immediately knew that this was the place I belonged.
When it was time for his set to finally begin, the venue erupted with the screams and cheers of our NYC trance family as Armin opened with his track ‘Together’. You could see many signs of those wishing him a happy birthday as well.
It was Armin’s own design team at 250K working with the proprietary MYO motion-capture bracelets that allowed ARMIN to control the lighting! No other DJ is doing this. This was created by Armin. As he moved his arms up and down the patterns in the backdrop lit up and dimmed down, almost as if he had wings, making the entire performance completely in sync with his music. From where I was standing in the crowd, I could hear the ooh’s and aah’s of concert goers around me.
One of my favorite songs off of Armin van Buuren’s new album, INTENSE, is Sound of the Drums. The crowd, myself included, expressed their excitement when the piano intro began and recited the lyrics perfectly. He did not only play tracks from his most recent album, but performed ‘Save My Night’, ‘Empire of Hearts’, and also paid tribute to Porter Robinson by dropping a remix to ‘Fellow Feeling’. I don’t believe there was ever a moment where the crowd was not screaming or jumping or showing their love and appreciation for Armin.
At the end of his set, Armin closed with ‘This Is What It Feels Like’. These lyrics resonated with me so much given the circumstances. I found myself singing, crying, smiling, and dancing all at the same time. I felt completely connected with myself and my deceased friend, and every feeling I had rose to the surface. There’s a reason Armin named it “A State of Trance”, it is because his music fills you with emotions. You can relate it to a situation in your own life, and feel both happy and sad at the same time. It puts you in a trance, where your eyes close, and your arms raise up, and suddenly everything makes sense and you know it will all work out in the end.
