Buma and the Performing Arts Fund NL present 25 YEARS OF DANCE MUSIC FROM THE NETHERLANDS:
As the EDM industry explodes in the U.S. in 2014, DJ/producers from the Netherlands lead the pack in terms of nightclub, festival and event bookings.
Twenty-thirteen marked 25-years of dance music in the Netherlands, a milestone which was celebrated extensively during the year, culminating with a number of special events at the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE). The anniversary celebrations emphasized the leading role that the Netherlands plays in the global electronic dance music (EDM) industry. With the year now fully passed and Miami Music Week in full swing with Dutch DJs taking every state big and small, it seems the perfect time to reveal some fascinating new facts and figures about the Dutch dance music industry.
At the end of the summer in 1988, what was then called house music exploded in the Netherlands. Since those days of exploring and pioneering, the Netherlands developed as one of the world’s leading countries for dance music, DJs and events with the Dutch dance scene generating over $587 million every year. Dutch artists continue to dominate awards like the UK’s DJ Magazine “Top 100 DJs” awards with acts like Armin van Buuren, Tiësto and Hardwell winning over half of the awards since the reader’s poll began 17 years ago. But it’s not only Dutch EDM that continues to flourish; the underground scene also produces some of the most celebrated artists and labels in electronic music today.
Some of the world’s leading DJ/producers happen to be Dutch. There will be a flood of talent from the Netherlands descended upon Miami during the annual Miami Music Week (also known as WMC) to play at Ultra Music Festival and myriad beach, pool, nightclub and hotel parties from March 26th contingent are luminaries including Armin van Buuren, Tiësto, Afrojack, Chuckie, Hardwell, Joris Voorn, Nicky Romero and others.
